Revelations from the Word

To what can I compare this generation? It is like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends,

‘We played wedding songs,
and you didn’t dance,
so we played funeral songs,
and you didn’t mourn.’

Matthew 11:16-17

When Jesus was trying to describe what this generation was like - he used this poem. For a long time I thought it odd. I mean who responds to music in this way? Perhaps we have become desensitized to music from the media. Everything you watch on Youtube, Instagram or TV moves you to feel something. Imagine if everytime you heard a mournful song you began to cry. You wouldn’t get much done! But I gained a better understanding of this verse thanks to my (at the time) newly born son, Pascal. From about 6 months old Pascal would respond would often break into a momentary groove when hearing music 🎼. It’s like the music reached the depths of his soul and the only natural response was to DANCE!

When Jesus spoke to the Pharisees and Jewish elite, they were no longer listening with their hearts. His music wasn’t reaching their souls. Their hearts were hard and they were subduing everything to logic. When Jesus speaks may we have soft hearts so we can dance to His tune! Amen! - Cyle Myers
